The ramblings of a developer
I remember, but thats because food is one of my vices, and I will travel the distance for amazing food. Truth: around 2003 I convinced Greg to go on a 2-hour road trip for ice cream with me. We often take simple things for granted -- like having the ability to recall what we had for lunch today. (I had an egg salad sandwich in case you were interested.) According the the Alzheimers Association: - 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimers - Alzheimers is the only cause of death in the top 10 that cannot be prevented, cured or slowed. - Almost two-thirds of Americans diagnosed with Alzheimers are women - Only 45% of people with Alzheimers or their caregivers report being told of their diagnosis. In 2006, Gregs dear "Nana" was diagnosed with this debilitating disease. None of us saw the signs until we started to piece memories together after the diagnosis: repetitive stories, putting the car in reverse instead of drive, or spontaneously making boxed mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving when she always made from scratch. While our family made light of the situation through humor and love, the disease dragged on the inevitable for many years. While I was not biologically related, she became as much of a grandparent to me as much as my own. Because of that, watching Nanas mental and physical debilitation over the years was difficult and most importantly her caregivers (her children) who sacrificed their own lives to make sure she would never need to be in assisted living. This past February, we finally said goodbye to Nana after 9 years of Alzheimers and while there has been continued advances combatting this disease, were still a long ways from any form of a cure. Lets continue the fight together and donate to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund, which spends 100% of their funding solely on research. Think about it, that's: - a week of packed lunches instead of going out ($60) - bring your own coffee to work instead of stopping at Starbucks ($20) - one less cute black dressfor your closet To start the ball rolling, Chillidog Hosting will donate $500 (USD) to the Cure Alzheimers Fund, and will match your generosity 100% through July 31, 2015. Just note your donation amount on our Facebook page or via Twitter, and well take care of the rest. So what are you waiting for? Lets put this disease in the dog house where it belongs! please note we will match donations total up to $500 USD for the duration of this event
