The ramblings of a developer

Are you paying too much for hosting?

Are you paying too much for hosting? We hear from a lot of users and are constantly surprised by the tricks that other hosts pull. A few things that we've learned about some hosts is very surprising and really grinds our gears. I would like to detail a few of them here.

OVH

  • Multiple domains. If you'd like to host more than 1 domain in your account, you will need to open another account.Javabean Hosting users can add as many add-on domains as they'd like.
  • Premium support up charge. 20 per 'incident' (whatever that means) or 43 per monthto look into an issue with your account for their "VIP" services. Everyone at Javabean Hosting is a very important person (VIP). We won't charge you to look into something on your account or answer your questions. You have the right to know!

GoDaddy

  • Email.A huge thing to look out for with GoDaddy is their email. If you want to use email with your domain, it is extra. If you want to use IMAP with your domain, it is extra. Javabean Hosting users can use IMAP, SMTP, and POP without any additional charges.
  • Backups. If you want to generate a backup of your account, you need to subscribe to one of their premium services. Javabean Hosting users can generate an entire snapshot of their account at any time. Why penalize users for using due diligence and being proactive about site backups?

Siteground

  • Multiple domains. Similar to OVH, Siteground users must subscribe to a "plus" package to add multiple domains to their account. Why should the web savvy users be penalized?
  • Premium support up charge. New accounts come with 3 months of free premium support. You should receive top notch support no matter what plan you subscribe to.
